The New Movement to Feed Pet Birds Whole Foods
January 28 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm GMTFree
Leslie Moran, a holistic animal nutrition and care consultant, is passionate about ending avian malnutrition in exotic birds, parrots and finches. Kevin C. nominated her for a Healthy Pets Animal Game Changer Award for the work she’s doing to teach bird lovers how to feed species-appropriate, whole foods to their pets.
Leslie first fell in love with birds in 1997. At the time, she belonged to three different bird clubs and was excited to start breeding owl finches and parrots. Sadly, her pair of scarlet-chested grasskeets ended up dying shortly after she got them — one of a vitamin K deficiency and the other from lymphoma.
“To cut a long experience very short, nearly all of the birds that I bought for breeding … died … So when I looked at that, I realized, well something is going on here,” she said. “I had actually been working with dog and cat institutions since the ’80s …
And I do homemade dog and cat food for my own dogs and cats to this day. I realized just right off the bat that there was nothing available in the market that was comparable to what I fed my dogs and cats. So, I began researching and experimenting with different things.”
This led her to sprouting and ultimately to the development of her “balanced exotic avian maintenance diet food plan.”1
